The University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City originated as a medical school within the University of Saigon, was established in 1947 during the period of French Indochina. Professor C. Massias served as the principal. [2] It was located at 28 Testard/Tran Quy Cap Street, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City (now Vo Van Tan Street).

Đặng Thùy Trâm (November 26, 1942 – June 22, 1970) was a Vietnamese doctor. She worked as a battlefield surgeon for the People's Army of Vietnam and Vietcong during the Vietnam War . Her wartime diaries, which chronicle the last two years of her life, attracted international attention following their publication in 2005.
