[1] This relative obscurity is mostly due to the greater attention paid to his subsequent writings. [2] In his last original book Ecce Homo, Nietzsche writes that Daybreak was the "book [in which] my campaign against morality begins". [2]
Nietzsche thinks his notion of the will to power is far more useful than Schopenhauer's will to live for explaining various events, especially human behavior—for example, Nietzsche uses the will to power to explain both ascetic life-denying impulses and strong life-affirming impulses as well as both master and slave morality.
On this point the essay prefigures theories concerning a destructive "will to truth" that Nietzsche discusses in On the Genealogy of Morals, Beyond Good and Evil, and The Gay Science. [2] As an illustration of a motivated seeker of truth, Nietzsche takes Heraclitus, although he also discusses Pythagoras and Empedocles. [2]
