Kriya Yoga was brought to international awareness by Paramahansa Yogananda, a disciple of Swami Sri Yukteswar Giri, with his book Autobiography of a Yogi [2] [3] and through Yogananda's introductions of the practice to the West from 1920.
Paramahansa Yogananda (born Mukunda Lal Ghosh; January 5, 1893 – March 7, 1952) was an Indian-American Hindu monk, yogi and guru who introduced millions to meditation and Kriya Yoga through his organization, Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF) / Yogoda Satsanga Society (YSS) of India – the only one he created to disseminate his teachings.
According to Carolyn Edy of the Yoga Journal, the court determined that SRF did not have sole rights for the term Self-realization or to the name and likeness of Paramahansa Yogananda. Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda is a spiritual classic published in 1946. It recounts Yogananda's life, his search for his guru, and his teachings on Kriya Yoga. The book has introduced many to meditation and yoga and has been influential in both Eastern and Western spiritual circles.
He had only a few long-term disciples, but in 1910, the young Mukunda Lal Ghosh would become Sri Yukteswar's most well known disciple, eventually spreading the teachings of Kriya Yoga throughout the world as Paramahansa Yogananda with his church of all religions – Self-Realization Fellowship/Yogoda Satsanga Society of India. Paramahansa Yogananda, Founder Headquarters of SRF at Mt. Washington at 3880 San Rafael Ave., Los Angeles, CA. Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF) is a worldwide religious organization founded in 1920 by Paramahansa Yogananda, the Indian guru who authored Autobiography of a Yogi.
Hariharananda Giri, affectionately known as "Baba" to his students, was known as a Kriya Yogi in the lineage of Mahavatar Babaji, Lahiri Mahasaya, Yukteswar Giri, and Paramahansa Yogananda. [1] [3] In 1932, Rabi went to meet the Kriya master, SriYukteshwar Giri, who initiated him into Kriya Yoga, in his Serampore ashram, West Bengal.
After studying lessons from Yogananda's Self-Realization Fellowship and graduating from high school, he met Yogananda in 1949 and joined the monastic students at Yogananda's Self-Realization Fellowship. In 1951, he was ordained by Paramahansa Yogananda. In 1952, he was "appointed Minister of the SRF Center in Phoenix, Arizona", teaching kriya yoga.
