It is the southernmost of four large bays and gulfs of the White Sea , the others being the Dvina Bay , the Mezen Bay , and the Kandalaksha Gulf .
The islands separate the Onega Bay from the main volume of the White Sea. The closest mainland is the Onega Peninsula. The shores of the islands are very indented. They are formed of granites and gneiss. The relief of the islands is hilly (the highest point is 107 m).

The Northern Dvina (Се́верная Двина́, IPA: [ˈsʲevʲɪrnəjə dvʲɪˈna]; Komi: Вы́нва, romanized: Výnva) is a river in northern Russia flowing through Vologda Oblast and Arkhangelsk Oblast into the Dvina Bay of the White Sea. Along with the Pechora River to the east, it drains most of Northwest Russia into the Arctic Ocean.
