Over the years there's been several Army Men style games that I think are worth mentioning for anyone trying to go beyond the classic 3DO titles for more modern training simulations! Running With Rifles - Similar to the overhead gameplay of the original Army Men PC games, this game puts you in the boots of Green, Grey or Brown soldiers.
The original Army Men game is good, but brutally hard. I think Sarge's Heroes 2 was supposed to be one of the other better ones. The rest are fairly mediocre at best.
Army Men RTS however is very very simple for more “traditional” RTSs. Regardless of how many people are playing in multiplayer, everyone is on the same level, unless skill is a variable. The only difference between the Tan army and the Red army in this game is color. Every player has the same troops, the same buildings and the same upgrades.

Yes. Army Men 2 on PC was the best IMO and then Army Men: Toys in Space was allegedly a slightly worse version of Army Men 2 but with aliens. Haven’t played the latter yet but it’s on my gog wishlist. Regularly on sale for $1.79

I’m talking about your standard, inexpensive “little green army men” figurines. When I look online, the ones I’m finding are all the same cheaply made variant, probably from the same manufacturer, and they are too flimsy for my liking. They also have a darker green colour which doesn’t appeal to me.
In the latter case, army men may have opened the door a little, but had I been told that I could play a game WITH my army men, I probably would have written this whole hobby off. Getting the fun to assemble and paint minis was the draw first. That being said, things can and do change.
