Medical education in Thailand was pioneered by King Chulalongkorn, who founded the country's first medical school called the "School of Medical Practitioners" at Siriraj Hospital in 1889, now the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University. There are now 23 institutions offering medical programs nationwide, most of them public.
Siriraj was the residence of the late King of Thailand, Bhumibol Adulyadej, from September 2009 to August 2013. He entered the hospital for treatment of a respiratory condition. In October 2014 King Bhumibol had gall bladder surgery at Siriraj. He died there on 13 October 2016 at the age of 88.

The Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University was transferred a piece of land adjacent to the Chao Phraya River from the State Railway of Thailand following the board resolutions since 2003 from the cabinet and State Railway of Thailand, and finally on 11 January 2010 with an area of 33 rai, 2 ngan, and 94 square wa (53,976 square meters).
