Waterfall in the national park. Horton Plains is located on the southern plateau of the central highlands of Sri Lanka. [2] The peaks of Kirigalpoththa (2,389 m (7,838 ft)) and Thotupola Kanda (2,357 m (7,733 ft)), the second and the third highest of Sri Lanka, are situated to the west and north respectively.
Improving export floriculture, ex situ conservation of wet lowland plants, and bamboo cultivation are also promoted in this garden. [1] The garden was opened to the public in late October 2014 and it is the most recently constructed botanical garden in Sri Lanka. [2]

The Sri Lanka Forest Department has two offices in the reserve, one of which (at the southeastern entrance) has a nature education centre with a display of pictures, posters, stuffed animals, etc. Being easily accessible and containing a variety of flora and fauna the forest has a great educational and recreational value.
Of Sri Lanka's 26 endemic birds, the 20 rainforest species all occur here, including the elusive red-faced malkoha, green-billed coucal and Sri Lanka blue magpie. Reptiles include the endemic green pit viper and hump-nosed vipers , and there are a large variety of amphibians, especially tree frogs .
