Pampus argenteus, the silver pomfret or white pomfret (or pompano to avoid confusion with true pomfrets of the genus Bramidae), is a species of butterfish that lives in the Indo-West Pacific, spanning the coastal waters of the Middle East, Eastern Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and East Asia. Pampus is a genus of ray-finned fish of the family Stromateidae. They are an important food fish in East and Southeast Asia. In common parlance they are often called pomfrets, although scientifically the term pomfret properly refers to fish of the genus Bramidae. An alternative name for "pomfrets" of the Pampus genus is "pompano".

Monodactylus argenteus is a species of fish in the family Monodactylidae, the moonyfishes. Its common names include silver moonyfish , or natal moony , [ 2 ] butter bream , and diamondfish . [ 3 ] It is native to the western Pacific and Indian Oceans , including the Persian Gulf , Red Sea , and associated estuaries, such as the Mekong Delta .
