The University of New Mexico (UNM; Spanish: Universidad de Nuevo México) [6] is a public research university in Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States.Founded in 1889 by the New Mexico Territorial Legislature, it is the state's second oldest university, a flagship university in the state, [7] [8] and the largest by enrollment, with 22,630 students in 2023.
The UNM Cancer Center was established in 1975, and is currently the only NCI Comprehensive Cancer Center in the state of New Mexico. [5] In addition, Carrie Tingley Hospital - which was originally founded in Hot Springs in 1937 as a hospital for crippled children - moved to Albuquerque in 1981 and now operates within the UNMH system.
The school uses UNM Hospital as its primary teaching hospital, along with the VA Medical Center located at Kirtland Air Force Base, along with the other hospitals that make up the UNM Hospitals system. Medical students may also complete select rotations with community providers and hospital systems throughout the state of New Mexico.
