During Northern Rhodesian times, the school was known as Prince Philip Secondary School, and was the only school for Asian students. [2] At the time, its hostels (dormitories) were some of the highest buildings in the city. It has since developed into a multiracial, multicultural school, with Christian, Hindu, and Muslim students. [3]
The school's name was changed to David Kaunda Secondary Technical School to offer senior secondary school education up to the 'A' levels in 1965. It was a boys school until 1993, when the school opened its doors to the first girls and has hitherto been a co-education boarding school. In 1995, the first grade 12 girl students graduated.

Lusaka West Secondary School was established in 2000, under the Republic of Zambia education Act. The school opened its doors on 15 January 2007 with nine students. By the end of the year the number had grown to more than 60.
