The University of the Western Cape (UWC; Afrikaans: Universiteit van Wes-Kaapland) is a public research university in Bellville, near Cape Town, South Africa. The university was established in 1959 by the South African apartheid government as a university for Coloured people only.
It is used as a residence hall to house undergraduates at the university, and mandates 24-hour quiet hours. [13] It was once a women-only dorm, but is now unisex. Hansee Hall has its own residence hall council called the Kingdom of Hansee. The hall council hosts an annual semi-formal ball open to all residence hall students at the university. [14]
In 1971, foundations for the building were laid and provision was made for a fourth storey: the future home of UWC Faculty of Dentistry, a unique situation housing two faculties of dentistry under one roof. The first Dean of Dentistry at UWC, serving from the University of Stellenbosch, Prof HS Breytenbach, commenced duty on July 1, 1974.
