At 305.777 miles (492.100 km), it is the third longest California state route, after Route 1 and Route 99, and the longest east-west route. Route 299's western terminus is at US 101 at the northern edge of Arcata , and its eastern terminus is at the Nevada state line at a point east of Cedarville .
In 1931, it was rerouted away from Zion and Winthrop Harbor while IL 42 north of Chicago remained untouched. [3] In 1935, an entire section of US 41 between Chicago and Waukegan was realigned to a new alignment. The new alignment closely matched the current routing of US 41. [4] By 1939, Skokie Highway (part of US 41) was fully completed.
The current alignment, built in the mid-1980s as a mostly two-lane freeway, continues east across rugged terrain to the city of Grass Valley, where it joins SR 49 on the Golden Center Freeway. The two routes travel northeast to Nevada City , where SR 49 turns northwest and SR 20 resumes its eastward course as a two-lane highway.
