Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron Three (MTBRon 3) was a United States Navy squadron based at Naval Base Cavite, Cavite, Philippines, from September 1941 to December 1941. It was commanded by Lieutenant John D. Bulkeley and made up of six motor torpedo boats : PT-31 , PT-32 , PT-33 , PT-34 , PT-35 , and PT-41 , the last as the squadron flagship .
On 11 March 1942, he picked up General Douglas MacArthur, his family, and his immediate staff, who had been ordered to flee the Philippines, and took them aboard PT 41 and other 77-foot (23 m) motor torpedo boats through over 600 nautical miles (1,000 km) of open ocean.
MacArthur eventually kept his promise, and returned to the Philippines. The Bataan Gang returned to Corregidor in March 1945 on four PT boats. [90] The flag flown on the PT boat that MacArthur escaped Corregidor on resides in the library of his high school alma mater, TMI Episcopal (formerly known as the Texas Military Institute). [91]
