Whittwood was built in the 1961 [2] as a competitor to The Quad at Whittier. It had three anchor tenants: JCPenney on the east, The Broadway on the west, [2] and in between, Myers Whittwood, owned by Boston Stores [3] and rebranded "Boston Stores" in 1976. [4] Sav-On was located across the northeast mall entrance from JCPenney.
The original part of the company, Smith Bits, grew out of a blacksmith shop in the small town of Whittier, California, in 1902. It was there, at the age of 20, that Herman C. Smith became the right man in the right place at the right time: oil was discovered nearby and the local drilling operators needed their fishtail bits sharpened.
Boston Stores acquired the Myers Whittier department storr in Whittier in 1972. Myers dated back to about 1905 when brothers Lemuel A. and Wilbert S. Myers founded the Myers Dry Goods Company in a 25-foot-wide (8-meter) storefront at 109 S. Greenleaf Ave., with a staff of five. [6]
