Tunnel Mountain, also known as Sleeping Buffalo (Siksiká: Iinii Istako; Nakoda: Eyarhey Tatanga Woweyahgey Wakân), is a mountain located in the Bow River Valley of Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada at the junction of the Spray River with the Bow and overlooking the Hot Springs on Sulphur Mountain.
The Tunnel Mountain Formation is present in the front ranges of the Canadian Rockies of western Alberta, and reaches a maximum thickness of about 200 metres (600 ft). It unconformably overlies the Etherington Formation or the Todhunter Formation of the Mississippian Rundle Group, and is conformably overlain by the Late Pennsylvanian Kananaskis Formation.
It was named Tunnel Mountain because surveyors initially wanted to make a tunnel for the Canadian Pacific Railway right through the mountain, instead of following the Bow River Valley. Located on the side of Tunnel Mountain is the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, which hosts events, including outdoor concerts, dance, opera, and theatre.
