Asking for a friend. I read Butler's recent "Who's Afraid of Gender?" with as open a mind as I could muster, but (her global influence aside) the shoddy reasoning and willful omissions in that book cannot be the work of any country's "greatest living philosopher," even bearing in mind that this is her first commercial, mass-market work.
Poor Noam Chomsky (95) suffered a major stroke back in June and spent time recuperating in a hospital in Brazil (his wife's native country). He's no doubt well looked after (and mentally still with it, even though he's lost the power of speech).
It surprises me how little exposure some posters who participate in the political threads here seem to have had to a wide cross-section of opinion. Someone like Noam Chomsky--whose mind I respect--is too far left for me, but I recognize his influence when I see it, and I would never automatically assume that a left-of-center poster was Russian.
