The Gnomes' Great Adventure (La gran aventura de los gnomos) is a Spanish animated film. It was produced by BRB Internacional by re-editing together four episodes of its television series The World of David the Gnome. The film follows the life and adventures of the gnomes as they struggle to outwit enemy trolls.
They contain fictional stories and guides about how gnomes live in harmony with their environment, such as what a gnome has in his first aid kit and how a gnome's house is built. The books were written by the Dutch author Wil Huygen and illustrator Rien Poortvliet , though they have claimed that parts were written by a gnome called David.
With the Gnomes series, Poortvliet acquired international fame. This series took on a life of its own, and was turned into an animated series, The World of David the Gnome in 1985. [6] His books have been translated into English, French, German, Swedish, Finnish, Spanish, Italian and other languages.
In the second book (De oproep der Kabouters) both Huygen and Poortvliet make appearances themselves in both the story and the illustrations as they get contacted by the gnomes because of the Gnomes book they have written together. The TV show, The World of David the Gnome, was based on their work. Huygen died on 14 January 2009 in Bilthoven.
