In 1858, William Stigant, a poet, essayist, and translator, wrote in his essay "Sir Philip Sidney" [7] that Shelley's "beautifully written Defence of Poetry" is a work which "analyses the very inner essence of poetry and the reason of its existence, – its development from, and operation on, the mind of man".
Other continuations and developments of Sidney's story were published separately. The hybrid editions did not efface the difference between the highly artificial, hellenized revised portion and the straightforward conclusion Sidney wrote originally. Nevertheless, it was in this form that Sidney's work entered history and reached a wide readership.
