State Route 4 (SR 4) is a 168.85-mile (271.74 km) long state highway located in southern and western Maine.It is a major interregional route and the first such route to be designated in the state.
SR 117 begins at SR 112 in Saco.It travels north through Buxton and Hollis, running concurrently with U.S. Route 202 (US 202) and SR 4 for 2 miles (3.2 km). It turns off and continues through the towns of Hollis, Limington, and Waterboro.
Maine was one of the first states to mark their state highway system. From 1914 to 1925, Maine used a system of lettered highways to designate cross-state routes. This system was the first of its kind in the United States coordinated by a single state, [citation needed] predating Wisconsin's system by three years.

After a 1.8-mile (2.9 km) concurrency, SR 140 splits off to the north while SR 219 turns southeast and crosses into the northern part of Turner in Androscoggin County. SR 219 crosses SR 4 and intersects both the northern terminus of SR 117 and eastern terminus of SR 108 before crossing the Androscoggin River into Leeds .
