A solid rocket booster (SRB) is a solid propellant motor used to provide thrust in spacecraft launches from initial launch through the first ascent. Many launch vehicles, including the Atlas V , [ 1 ] SLS and Space Shuttle , have used SRBs to give launch vehicles much of the thrust required to place the vehicle into orbit.
The SRB distributors in the SRBs are cross-strapped together. Thus, if one SRB received an arm or destruct signal, the signal would also be sent to the other SRB. Electrical power from the RSS battery in each SRB is routed to RSS system A. The recovery battery in each SRB is used to power RSS system B as well as the recovery system in the SRB.
The SRMU is a three-segment solid rocket motor. Each segment has a casing wound from graphite fibre composite and an insulation system of EPDM rubber and kevlar. [1] The casing is filled with a fuel grain composed primarily of ammonium perchlorate and aluminium, joined by a HTPB binder. [2]
The SRB-3 used in the H3 and Epsilon S rockets has one ton more propellant than the SRB-A series to increase its launch capability. To improve reliability and reduce cost, the separation mechanism of the SRB-3 has been greatly simplified compared to the SRB-A series, and the nozzle has been changed from a variable type to a fixed type.
Thiokol was an American corporation concerned initially with rubber and related chemicals, and later with rocket and missile propulsion systems. Its name is a portmanteau of the Greek words for sulfur (Greek: θεῖον, romanized: theion) and glue (Greek: κόλλα, romanized: kolla), an allusion to the company's initial product, Thiokol polymer.
The Graphite-Epoxy Motor (GEM) is a family of solid rocket boosters developed in the late 1980s and used since 1990. GEM motors are manufactured with carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer casings and a fuel consisting of HTPB-bound ammonium perchlorate composite propellant.

The AJ-60A rocket motor was developed between 1999 and 2003 for use on the Atlas V. [2] On January 19, 2006 the New Horizons spacecraft to Pluto was launched directly into a solar-escape trajectory at 16.26 kilometers per second (58,536 km/h; 36,373 mph) from Cape Canaveral using an Atlas V version with 5 of these SRBs and Star 48B third stage. [3]
