In 1976, after a disastrous 1975 season for the Bears, owner/founder George Halas decided to bring "dancing girls" to the Bears, after the success of other cheerleading corps like the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, Washington Redskins Cheerleaders and other squads prompted Halas to get the Bears a squad as well, and requested general manager Jim Finks to find a director.
The Triad varsity cheerleading squad won Illinois Cheerleading Coaches Association (ICCA) state titles in 2001 and 2002 in the Medium Varsity division. In 2006, they became the first squad to win both state championships (ICCA and IHSA). That was the first year that the Illinois High School Association considered cheerleading a sport.

NIU Cheerleading consists of two teams, All Girl and Large Coed. Both teams perform at football games, basketball games, and at the NCA College Nationals in Daytona Beach, Florida. In 2016, both teams made it to finals with the All-Girl team Finishing in 5th while the Large Coed team place 6th in the D1A Division.
