Chamonix-Mont-Blanc (French pronunciation: [ʃamɔni mɔ̃ blɑ̃]; Arpitan: Chamôni-Mont-Blanc), more commonly known simply as Chamonix (Chamôni), [a] [b] is a commune in the Haute-Savoie department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in Southeastern France. It was the site of the first Winter Olympics, held in 1924.
The Aiguille du Midi Cable Car in Chamonix attracts 500,000 people each year and gives views over much of the massif, and up towards Mont Blanc itself. Argentière is the starting point for the Téléphérique du Lognan cable car up to Les Grands Montets (3,295 m, 10,810 ft), a skiing area famous for its steep and demanding slopes, both on-piste as well as off-piste.
