Columbia is the county seat of Marion County, which was created out of Amite County in 1811, encompassing the southwest quarter of the current state of Mississippi. Before statehood in 1816, there were three territorial census/poll tax records taken of what was deemed Marion County at the time.

Ruth is located on the former Natchez, Columbia & Mobile Railroad and was first settled in the 1880s. The community is named for the daughter of Smith Felder, who opened its first post office in 1891. [3] In 1900, Ruth had a population of 20. [4] The Ruth School was founded in 1924 with funding from the Smith-Hughes Act.
The State Bank was established in 1902 with capital of $15,000. [4] During that period, the town had a brickyard, and a large planing mill for lumber. With construction of the Gulf and Ship Island Railroad through the town in the 1890s, the population increased from 350 to about 1,200 in 1906.
The area was first served by a post office [2] called Whitesville, which was established June 23, 1852, with Isham K. Pringle as first postmaster. The name was changed to Why Not (two words) on December 30, 1852, and was finally discontinued September 30, 1933, with mail thereafter going to Meridian.
Pattison was originally named Martin in honor of General William T. Martin. [5] Pattison is located on the former Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad and was once home to a drug store, grist mill, cotton gin, saloon, hotel, and multiple general stores.
Meridian is the eighth most populous city in the U.S. state of Mississippi, [2] with a population of 35,052 at the 2020 census. [3] It is the county seat of Lauderdale County and the principal city of the Meridian, Mississippi Micropolitan Statistical Area.
Gallman has a post office with ZIP code 39077, which opened on November 8, 1872. [2] [3] Gallman is home to Copiah Academy, a private school in the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools. Copiah Academy services K3-12th grades and is a Christian-based college preparatory school.
