In the 1990s, DuPont Forest was sold to the State of North Carolina, and as DuPont has completed cleanup of various areas, those areas have been made open to the public. A photograph of Triple Falls was one of the tools used to convince the state to purchase the property, which is now a 10,000-acre (4,047 ha) state forest.

Holmes Educational State Forest (HESF) is a 235-acre (0.95 km 2) state forest, located in Henderson County, North Carolina. [ 2 ] [ 3 ] It is near the much larger DuPont State Recreational Forest , which is responsible for its management. [ 3 ]
The trail is a part of the North Carolina State Trails System, which is a section of NCDPR and, by January 2019, 669 miles (1,077 km) of trail had been designated as a part of the MST by NCDPR. [ 2 ] The segments of MST along the Blue Ridge Parkway were designated as a National Recreation Trail in 2005.
