Batley and Spen was a constituency in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament. The most recent MP was Kim Leadbeater, a Labour politician, who was elected in a 2021 by-election by a 323-vote margin. The seat had returned Labour MPs since the 1997 general election.
Kim Leadbeater was born on 1 May 1976 in Dewsbury, to parents Jean and Gordon Leadbeater. [2] She is the younger sister of former MP Jo Cox (1974–2016). Leadbeater attended Heckmondwike Grammar School, and says that she has lived in "every little bit of" the local area. [3]
Batley and Spen has been represented by a Labour MP since 1997. [9] [10] Elizabeth Peacock has been the constituency's only Conservative MP, serving from 1983 to 1997.Brabin had held the seat since the 2016 Batley and Spen by-election, which was called after the murder of Jo Cox, the seat's incumbent MP.
Elsewhere, Batley and Spen, and Dewsbury were realigned to form Dewsbury and Batley, and Spen Valley, and Leeds West and Pudsey were abolished, with parts of each forming Leeds West and Pudsey. Leeds Central effectively became Leeds South and a new constituency named Leeds Central and Headingley was created.
It returns one Member of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Further to the completion of the 2023 Periodic Review of Westminster constituencies, the seat was re-established for the 2024 general election, formed primarily from the (abolished) constituency of Batley and Spen. Helen Joanne Cox [2] (née Leadbeater; 22 June 1974 – 16 June 2016) was a British politician who served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Batley and Spen from May 2015 until her murder in June 2016. She was a member of the Labour Party. Born in Batley, West Yorkshire, Cox studied Social and Political Sciences at Pembroke College, Cambridge.
