The province of Highland Papua (Provinsi Papua Pegunungan) in Indonesia is divided into eight kabupaten which in turn are divided administratively into districts, known as distrik under the law of 2001 on "special autonomy for Papua province".
The districts of Papua (as now reduced by the reorganisation of July 2022, which separated twenty regencies previously part of Papua Province into three new provinces of Central Papua, Highland Papua and South Papua) and their respective regencies are as follows (as of December 2019).
Highland Papua (Indonesian: Papua Pegunungan) is a province of Indonesia, which roughly follows the borders of the Papuan customary region of Lano-Pago (often shortened to La Pago). As created, Jayawijaya Regency covered an area coincident with the whole of what in 2022 became Highland Papua Province. However, on 11 December 2002 three new Regencies - Bintang Mountains Regency (Kabupaten Pegunungan Bintang), Tolikara Regency, and Yahukimo Regency - were created from parts of Jayawijaya Regency.
Included in this new legislation was the provision to create new provinces, and in July 2022 new national legislation split South Papua, Central Papua, Highland Papua from Papua [12] through Law Number 14 of 2022, Law Number 15 of 2022, and Law Number 16 of 2022 respectively. [9]
