From 1987 until 1997, the 278th's MI unit was the 302nd MI Company, U.S. Army Reserve (USAR), stationed in Memphis, TN. The MI organization for the 278th converted from the USAR to the ARNG as part of the realignment of combat, combat service, and combat service support units between the Army's two Reserve Components that began in 1995.
Building 6981 was originally located in an undeveloped wooded area of Camp Shelby at coordinates The building was relocated approximately 0.75 mi (1.21 km) onto the grounds of the Mississippi Armed Forces Museum and is the oldest structure at Camp Shelby, dating from the WWI era.
Organized in April 1917 in the Mississippi National Guard as the 1st Field Artillery with headquarters at Jackson. Drafted into Federal service 5 August 1917. Reorganized and redesignated 27 September 1917 as the 140th Field Artillery and assigned to the 39th Division. Demobilized 1 May 1919 at Camp Shelby, Mississippi.
