Upon the 2015–16 season, Tolvanen opted to pursue a North American development path, choosing to play junior hockey for the Sioux City Musketeers of the United States Hockey League (USHL). [3] During the season, he put up 17 goals and 21 assists for 38 points, causing him to be selected by the Oshawa Generals in the 2016 OHL Import Draft. [4]

After retiring as a player, he moved to the coaching ranks with the Sioux City Musketeers. He replaced a fired head coach in the middle of the 1996–97 season and remained in the role for four years.
