The Higher School Certificate (HSC) is the credential awarded to secondary school students who successfully complete senior high school level studies (Years 10, 11 and 12 or equivalent) in New South Wales and some ACT schools in Australia, as well as some international schools in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, China, and Papua New Guinea.
However, the NSW Government remained committed to the School Certificate for several years. [4] In 2010, the New South Wales Government asked the Board of Studies to review the School Certificate as part of the changes to the school leaving age in New South Wales and also the development of a national curriculum. The Auburn campus opened on 27 April 1998 with 200 students from Kindergarten to Year 2. In 2007 the first cohort of Year 12 students, completing the Higher School Certificate graduated from the college. [6] Between 2008 and 2018 the school more than tripled in size, from approximately 860 students in 2008 to 2800 students in 2018. [2] [7]
For Year 8 to Year 12 entry into selective schools, students do not take an external test, however they can apply directly to a school for entry. The application package is standard to all government selective schools, with internal selection committees considering applications each year during August or September. [2]
The college offers students over eighty courses of study [7] for the award of the ACT Year 12 Certificate, with students who complete a T (Tertiary) Package able to sit the ACT Scaling Test (AST) to obtain an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) for admission to university.
Narrabundah College was formed as a result of the ACT developing its own education system in 1974. The new system meant that public high schools would only teach from year 7 to 10, and that years 11 and 12 would be completed at a separate school. The pre-existing Narrabundah High School was re-formed as Narrabundah College. [3]
