Windermere is a community on Lake Rosseau, located within and governed by the municipality of Muskoka Lakes.Windermere hosts two resorts, two community centres, two public beaches, two public docks, an eighteen-hole golf course and a post office all within a 500 metre radius.
The village of Rosseau is located at the northern tip of Lake Rosseau and is the location of one of the original Ontario summer resorts which brought exposure to the area. Pratts Point and Rosseau House were well known and although the hotel was destroyed long ago, the vista and scenery remain. Windermere House is a resort located at Lake Rosseau.
Steamboat Bay in Port Carling. The township is located on Canadian Shield and thus is marked with outcrops of igneous rock and evergreen trees. Although inland from both Lake Huron's Georgian Bay and Lake Simcoe, the township contains the Muskoka Lakes consisting of Lake Muskoka, Lake Rosseau and Lake Joseph, amongst many other smaller lakes.
Founded in 1896 by Charles W. Waterhouse, Deerhurst Resort was the first major summer resort on Peninsula Lake and Muskoka's northern lakes. [8] Cedar Grove Lodge started as a resort in 1927, Tally Ho Inn was established as a year-round resort in 1939, [ 9 ] and Colonial Bay was established as Brooklyn Lodge in the 1940s. [ 10 ]
The Royal Muskoka Hotel was the first grand hotel built on the Muskoka Lakes. [1] The project grew out of the Muskoka and Georgian Bay Navigation Company, which had been founded in 1880 by Alexander Peter Cockburn (1837–1905). [2] By the turn of the century, his shipping business had declined due to the expansion of railways.
