Hilton Head Island, often referred to as simply Hilton Head, is a Lowcountry resort town and barrier island in Beaufort County, South Carolina, United States. [8] It is 20 miles (32 km) northeast of Savannah, Georgia (as the crow flies), and 95 miles (153 km) southwest of Charleston.
In 1955, at age 26, Charles drafts a land-use plan for a low-density development on timberland at the southern end of Hilton Head Island on which his family held an interest. The following year, Charles E. Fraser, bought his father's interest in The Hilton Head Company and began developing it into Sea Pines Plantation.
In recent years, Hilton Head has also developed a large permanent resident population. Hilton Head Island, which has an area of approximately 55 square miles (140 km 2 ), had a year-round population of 37,661 at the 2020 census , [ 3 ] although during the peak of summer vacation season the population can swell to 150,000.
