Intersection syndrome can be caused by direct trauma to the second extensor compartment. It is however commonly brought on by activities that require repetitive wrist flexion and extension. Weightlifters, rowers, and other athletes are particularly prone to this condition. The patient presents with pain over dorsal aspect of the forearm and wrist.
The cysts may intrude into the spine, which may cause pain and dysesthesia in distant extremities. [ 20 ] Cystic adventitial disease , in which a cyst occurs within the popliteal artery near the knee, has been proposed recently to occur by an articular mechanism, with a conduit leading from the joint, similar to the development of ganglion ...
The chief complaint of this disease is usually pain in the dorsal aspect of the upper forearm, and any weakness described is secondary to the pain. Tenderness to palpation occurs over the area of the radial neck. Also, the disease can be diagnosed by a positive "middle finger test", where resisted middle finger extension produces pain.
Symptomatic alleviation (palliative treatment) is provided mainly by splinting the thumb and wrist. Pain medications such as NSAIDs can also be considered. [4] [6] Steroid injections are commonly used, but are not proved to alter the natural history of the condition. [7] Surgery to release the first dorsal component is an option. [4]
Examination may identify limited passive wrist motion, pain at the extremes of wrist motion, tenderness at the radioscaphoid joint, and dorsal radial prominence. [2] Activities that use forceful wrist extension such as rising from a chair or push-ups may be painful.
An illustration of wrist pain. Wrist pain or open wrist is a syndrome inhibiting use of a hand due to pain in anatomical structures of the wrist. [1] It most commonly results from an injury to a ligament. [1] The pain may be sharp from a traumatic injury or from chronic repetitive wrist activities. [1]
The mechanism of injury is usually repetitive resisted extension, as with rowing, weight lifting, or pulling. [citation needed] Intersection syndrome is often confused with another condition called DeQuervain's syndrome, which is an irritation of the thumb-sided set of tendons at the wrist, called the first dorsal compartment.
Wrist drop is a medical condition in which the wrist and the fingers cannot extend at the metacarpophalangeal joints. The wrist remains partially flexed due to an opposing action of flexor muscles of the forearm. As a result, the extensor muscles in the posterior compartment remain paralyzed.
