The Tivoli Hotel was built in 1927 as a 6-story, T-shaped brick structure in Second Renaissance Revival architectural style. It was one of only four historic Mississippi Coast hotels still standing, but abandoned, at the turn of the 21st century. In 2005, a casino barge slammed into the structure during Hurricane Katrina. The Tivoli Hotel contained 64 guest rooms in addition to its lobby, dining room, and ballroom. It was considered to be a luxury hotel for its time. In 1969, Hurricane Camille with its 30-foot (9.1 m) tidal surge cut Ship Island into two distinct islands, to form East Ship Island and West Ship Island. The gap was known as the Camille Cut. Ship Island before (top) and after (below) Hurricane Katrina. In 1972, the original 1886 wooden lighthouse was accidentally burned down by campers.
