Vancouver Public Library (VPL) is the public library system for the city of Vancouver, British Columbia.In 2023, VPL had more than 4.6 million visits with patrons borrowing nearly 10.4 million items including: books, ebooks, CDs, DVDs, video games, newspapers and magazines.
Nancy Tessman, formerly of Salt Lake City Public library, was selected as the new director in 2012, and served through 2015. She was succeeded by current director Amelia Shelley in 2015. In 1901 Vancouver requested $50,000 from industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie for the purpose of building a library. Carnegie agreed, provided the City of Vancouver supplied the site and contributed $5000 a year. [1] The original public library was completed in 1903. For decades, the top floor was the home of the Vancouver Museum.
Later in the same year demolishing of the structures commenced. Construction of the mall was completed in 1974 and the opening took place on March 28, 1974, with a three-day celebration. Some initial tenants included Safeway, Fields, Radio Shack, Shoppers Drug Mart, and the Mount Pleasant Branch of the Vancouver Public Library. [1]

Part of the Fort Vancouver Regional Library District, the 83,000-square-foot library is the second largest in the Portland metropolitan area, second to the Central Library in Portland, Oregon.
