Rockwell Field is a former United States Army Air Corps (USAAC) military airfield, located 1.1 miles (2 kilometres) northwest of the city of Coronado, California, on the northern part of the Coronado Peninsula across the bay from San Diego, California.

The final intercollegiate football game at Rockwell Field was played October 12, 1940, a 26–0 homecoming win over Mount Union, attended by a reported crowd of approximately 5,000. [6] Both the baseball and track and field teams remained at Rockwell Field for their respective 1941 seasons, beginning play at their new facilities in 1942. [7]
The Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex houses Le Moyne College's athletic teams, visiting competitors, and coaches. The Army resisted strongly, as Rockwell Field was a major training airfield for flight cadets, and had been using the field for flight training since 1912. A proposal surfaces for the Navy to trade NAS Moffett Field to the Army in exchange for Rockwell Field, California; Bolling Field, Washington, D.C.; and Ford Island, Hawaii.
While the group was assigned at Rockwell Field, the fledgling Air Force was testing new theories and ideas. In early 1931, the 7th began training aircrews in radio-controlled interception. A bomber, acting as a target, reported by radio to a ground station, giving location, altitude and course.
Three months later, it was redesignated the 14th Aero Squadron, and in July 1918 as Squadron A, Rockwell Field. It operated as a flying training unit with Curtiss JN-4 , Curtiss JN-6, and Thomas-Morse S-4 aircraft until it was demobilized in November 1918 following the end of World War I .
On 20 July 1917, the Signal Corps Aviation School is named Rockwell Field in honor of 2nd Lt. Lewis C. Rockwell, killed in this crash, and Scott Field, Illinois is named for the first enlisted personnel killed in an aviation crash. Scott Air Force Base remains the only U.S. Air Force base named for an enlisted man.
