Ramirez was born in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1929, [1] where her father, the Mexican bullfighter Jose Ramirez, known as Gaonita, was appearing. Her mother, Gloria Cestero, was the daughter of a politically active Puerto Rican family and subsequently became a leader in the Puerto Rican immigrant community in New York City. [2]
During the 1940s, the Mexican government invited a large number of Greeks to Sinaloa to improve harvest of tomatoes. [3] Soon the Greek community became so large that the area around the Tamazula , Humaya , and Culiacán rivers became known as the "Valle de Grecia" (“Valley of Greece”). [ 4 ]

A mass shooting on January 19, 2013, in South Valley, New Mexico, resulted in the deaths of five family members of the Griego family: the parents and three younger children.
