Mumbai Metropolitan Region (ISO: Muṁbaī Mahānagara Pradēśa; abbreviated to MMR and previously also known as Greater Bombay Metropolitan Area), [6] [7] is a metropolitan area consisting of Mumbai and its satellite towns in the northern Konkan division of Maharashtra in western India.
The MMRDA was created on 26 January 1975 under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority Act, 1974 Government of Maharashtra. The agency is responsible for planning and coordination of development activities in the Region.

A 38.24 km (23.76 mi) long Colaba–Bandra–Charkop line was proposed as Line 2 in the original Mumbai Metro masterplan unveiled by the MMRDA in 2004. A 13.37 km (8.31 mi) long Bandra-Kurla–Mankhurd line and a 7.5 km (4.7 mi) line from Charkop to Dahisar were proposed as Line 3 and Line 4, respectively, in the same plan.

In February 2017, the MMRDA announced that the DMRC was preparing a detailed project report (DPR) on Metro 10. Preliminary plans were prepared jointly by MMRDA and DMRC. The line will run parallel to Thane - Bhayandar Highway, and will join metro route no 9 at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk.
