Douglas (officially known as the City of the Village of Douglas) is a city in Allegan County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,378 at the 2020 census . The city is surrounded by Saugatuck Township and the city of Saugatuck is adjacent on the north.
In 2012 Michigan's 120 brewing establishments (including breweries, brewpubs, importers, and company-owned packagers and wholesalers) employed 595 people directly, and more than 36,000 others in related jobs such as wholesaling and retailing. Its ruins are now buried beneath the sand dunes of the Lake Michigan shoreline at the mouth of the Kalamazoo River in Saugatuck Township, near the cities of Saugatuck and Douglas in Allegan County. It was founded in 1836 by New York land speculator Oshea Wilder, who hoped to build a port town to rival Chicago and Milwaukee. [1]
