In 1909, the City of Muskogee purchased the original 40 acres (160,000 m 2) of Honor Heights Park for $4,500. Agency Hill was officially named Honor Heights Park in 1919 in honor of the soldiers of World War I. Honor Heights Park is known for its azaleas and hosts the annual Azalea Festival each April. [1]
Arrowhead Mall was built in 1987 in the downtown district of Muskogee. [3] In 2005, J. Herzog bought the mall from its original owner, Warmack & Company. [citation needed] On April 10, 2010, a deadly shooting broke out at the Arrowhead Mall injuring at least five people and leaving one dead; witnesses say that the shooting was gang related. [4]
The museum originated with the Da-Co-Tah Indian Club, which began campaigning in September 1951 to use the Union Indian Agency building to house a local museum. [1] In 1954, the club sponsored legislation, H.R. Bill No. 8983 by U.S. Representative Ed Edmondson, that petitioned the return of the building to the municipal government of Muskogee, Oklahoma.
