The Great Steamboat Race is an annual steamboat race, taking place the Wednesday before the first Saturday of May, three days before the Kentucky Derby, as part of the Kentucky Derby Festival. The race was first run in 1963 and it takes place on the Ohio River in the span that runs between Louisville, Kentucky and Jeffersonville, Indiana .
Thunder on the Ohio was a hydroplane boat race in the H1 Unlimited season. Thunder was held each year on the Ohio River in downtown Evansville, Indiana , United States. Evansville had hosted Thunder on the Ohio consecutively since 1979 (although the race had been founded in 1938).
This was a "wildcat" race, administered by the Ohio Valley Motor Boat Racing Association of Cincinnati. The largest class present was the 225 Cubic Inch Class. The first Unlimited race took place in 1950. The Unlimited races at Madison from 1950 to 1953 were one-heat multi-class free-for-all affairs. They didn't count for National High Points.
