The EMD SD40 is an American 6-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between January 1966 and August 1972. 1,268 locomotives were built between 1966 and 1972. In 1972, an improved version with new electronics was developed and marketed as a new locomotive, the SD40-2 .
The GMD SD40-2(W) is a Canadian-market version of the SD40-2 diesel–electric locomotive, built for the Canadian National Railway (CN) by the Diesel Division of General Motors of Canada Ltd. (formerly General Motors Diesel) of London, Ontario; 123 were constructed between May 1975 and December 1980. [citation needed]
The locomotives were GP38-2s, GP40-2s and GP40-2Ls, and SD40-2s. To denote the comfort cab locomotives, a "W" was often applied at the end of the model name (i.e. GP38-2W, GP40-2W, SD40-2W), although this was not an official designation. The rest of the fleet were rebuilt as SD40-2R locomotives, during which their dynamic brakes were uninstalled and the locomotive cabs modified. Illinois Central's successor Canadian National Railway retired its remaining SD40As for scrapping in 2010. Locomotives 6009 and 6014 were acquired by Indiana Boxcar Corporation. [1]
