Golf course architecture is a specific discipline of landscape design, with many architects represented in the United States by the American Society of Golf Course Architects. Some architects are highly successful professional golfers who went on to design golf courses.

Ross designed dozens of courses across North America and is generally regarded as one of the top golf course designers of all time.
William Stephen Flynn (December 25, 1890 – January 24, 1944) was a prominent golf course architect during the early part of the 20th century. Flynn is most noted for designing Shinnecock Hills Golf Club on Long Island and Cherry Hills Country Club, Huntingdon Valley Country Club, Lancaster Country Club, and for his work at the Merion Golf Club.
Geoffrey St John Cornish (August 6, 1914 – February 10, 2012 [1]) was a golf course architect, author, and a fellow of the American Society of Golf Course Architects. [2] He designed over 200 courses, including 9-hole additions, around the world.
Dick Nugent (1931-2018) was a golf course developer and architect from Illinois.He graduated from the University of Illinois in 1958 with a degree in landscape architecture and started his professional career with Robert Bruce Harris, later becoming the principal architect of Killian and Nugent Inc.
