Built in 1929, it is an architecturally eclectic landmark in an area that was traditionally a center of African-American economic activity in the city. It was built by the Pearson family to serve as a funeral parlor and residence for the family, during the height of the Jim Crow era. The property was used as a funeral home until 1966. [2]

Jasper Township encompasses an area of 35.6 square miles (92 km²) and has no incorporated settlements. According to the USGS, it is home to five cemeteries: Brooks, Calvary, Oak Hill, Old Brooks, and Prairie Rose.
Pearson was also an abolitionist and involved with the Underground Railroad. The home he built for his family in Keosauqua, Iowa in 1845 was a two-story structure, and is a rare vernacular Georgian style house in Iowa. [2] Pearson imported the style from his native Maryland. The exterior of the first story is stone while the second is brick.
The building was constructed by the Corning Building Company in 1919-1920 and remains intact on the exterior. It was built by the Masonic Order of Corning on property purchased from the Walker estate.
The former Adams County Jail, also known as the House of History: Adams County Historical Society, is located in Corning, Iowa, United States. The limestone structure was built in 1877, and it mimicked the adjacent frame courthouse (no longer extant).
