Mayagüez (Spanish pronunciation: [maʝaˈɣwes], locally [maʝaˈweʔ]) is the ninth-largest [4] municipality in Puerto Rico.It was founded as Pueblo de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria de Mayagüez (Township of Our Lady of Candelaria), and is also known as La Sultana del Oeste (The Sultaness of the West), Ciudad de las Aguas Puras (City of Pure Waters), or Ciudad del Mangó (Mango City).
The hotel was built in 1963 by Hilton and was named Mayagüez Hilton. The hotel had a very modern design mimicking that of the Caribe Hilton hotel in San Juan. It had 140 rooms with air-conditioning and an Olympic-sized pool for its guests. The entrance still has the main gates of the Valdes Castle, showcasing its history.
The south side of the airport is the largest portion of the airport, but is currently undeveloped. Since the airport was transferred from the U.S. Air Force and the General Services Administration (GSA) to Puerto Rico Port Authority in 1973, the south side has been the object of various disputes and competing political campaign promises by local elected officials and local political candidates.

Veracruz Airport was constructed in 1942 in an area known as "Las Bajadas." The construction was carried out by Compañía Mexicana de Aviación.However, the financial resources for this project were provided by the United States government through Pan American Airlines, with funding authorized by special allocations from the U.S. Congress.
