Yes, older versions of the fonts should work. The only issue I am hearing is when Publisher is installed on Win8. Win8 fonts apparently are different and the result is the layouts of old Pub files, and especially the text boxes, can be skewed on Win8 machines. One of the fixes was to install Win7 fonts on the Win8 machines.

If you research 'web safe fonts' you might be able to find other fonts listed but here are the Publisher web safe fonts: Arial, Comic Sans MS, Courier New, Georgia, Impact, symbol, Times New Roman, Trebuchet MS, Verdana, and Wingdings. Publisher 2013 (Office 365) fonts look different. I have upgraded from Publisher 2003 to Publisher 2013 (Office 365). A font I use a lot (Gill Sans MT) appears different (although name appears the same), and is larger so many text boxes overflow. I have hundreds of publications that use this font, so it's a great problem.
