I live in Chicago and have been to the original Enco factory on the westside of Chicago. My Dad always wanted a shop and raising 7 kids it wasn't in the picture. Shortly after he retired as a machinist a deal came up on a brand new 9" x 36" Enco (may I not be struck by lightening) lathe. Gap bed cut metric and American threads.
Been shopping at Enco since 1983, when most of their tooling was US or European made, what a change. lately they have quit sending me email offers, the selection in sale flyer has gotten worse and MSC who I rarely do business with, calls me to ask me to use them and that they would give me same prices.

Jet tools, on the other hand, get daily hard use in my shop, and just keep running. I have a general machine/fabrication shop, with 2 or 3 guys working in it, so tools dont get pampered- we run things very hard. I have a jet belt/disc sander that we run big pieces of stainless into every day, and it still runs great after 8 years of very hard use.

A friend of mine purchased and Enco variable speed 9"X49 (I think)knee Mill 2 HP 3 phase June 2009, after 2 months of light use the X axis drive burned out, in September the motor smoked. He got mad and replaced it with a used Atrump mill which he raves about.
It has a 1.5 HP motor (220V 1P) with 12 speeds (50-1200 rpm) by changing v-belts and engaging a back gear). Max length is somewhere around 36" depending on the tailstock and centers. It has power feed and power cross feed, reversible feed and threading (left-hand), and separate leadscrew and feed rods.
Enco has good prices but, some of there stuff is real junk! I got c-5 collet idex , what a pile. I sent It back and paid the shipping. I guess I should gipe and maybe they would of pick up the shipping. Travers sems like Enco ship in many boxes from different locations and days, and you get to pay for the shipping.
I'd been searching craigslist for a while for a decent lathe frame and this 1980 Enco 92030 popped up for $600 and jumped at the opportunity. Included a fair bit of parts, 3 jaw, 4 jaw, drill chuck, dead centers, live centers, etc. Not really any tooling but with the tool post will fit up to 5/8" so I grabbed some HSS tools to get started.
