Sheila M. Cockrel née Sheila Murphy (born November 3, 1947) [2] is an American politician and consultant. She was a member of the Detroit City Council from 1994 to 2009. [3] The widow of Kenneth Cockrel, Sr. and stepmother of Kenneth Cockrel, Jr., she "had [a] fractious relationship with" Monica Conyers, whose resignation she called "an appropriate decision". [4]
Kenneth Cockrel, Jr. is the son of Kenneth Cockrel Sr. (November 5, 1938 – April 25, 1989), a former Detroit city council member and attorney. He was a self-proclaimed Marxist-Leninist who died from a heart attack. [9]

The Detroit City Council is the legislative body of Detroit, Michigan, United States. The full-time council is required to meet every business day for at least 10 months of the year, with at least eight of these meetings occurring at a location besides city hall. The Detroit City Council has elected Mary Sheffield to be its president. [2]
