McIntosh County is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census , the population was 10,975, [ 1 ] a drop of 23.4 percent since the 2010 census . The county seat is Darien .
Darien (/ d ɛər i ˈ ɛ n /) is a city in and the county seat of McIntosh County, Georgia, United States. [5] It lies on Georgia's coast at the mouth of the Altamaha River, approximately 50 miles (80 kilometers) south of Savannah, and is part of the Brunswick, Georgia metropolitan statistical area.

The area of the island had been known as the Wawhooo Islands by the local Native population. In 1760 John Barber petitioned General Oglethorpe, who was governor of the colony of Georgia, to grant hammocks on the south side of the South New port River, in what is now McIntosh County. He was requesting confirmation of his rights to the land.
