Nana Visitor (/ n ə ˈ n ɑː / nə-NAH; [1] born Nana Tucker July 26, 1957), is an American actress, best known for playing Kira Nerys in the television series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Jean Ritter in the television series Wildfire.
Nana Visitor had just given birth to a baby boy mere months before she was called to audition for the role of Kira Nerys, and her becoming a mother actually shaped her decision process for accepting or turning down roles. With the character of Kira Nerys, Visitor felt "completely engaged on every level by the part". [2]

The storyline involving Nana Visitor and René Auberjonois was originally intended by the writers to be the A-Plot of the episode. Ira Steven Behr and Robert Hewitt Wolfe conceived the story and wrote the script for "Heart of Stone", and intended the Odo/Kira storyline to be the A-Plot.
