You need an Identity and Access Management System (I&A) User ID and Password to create and manage NPIs. If you do not have an I&A Account, select the ‘CREATE or MANAGE AN ACCOUNT’ button to go to I&A and create your account:

Why can’t I use my Type 2 NPI User ID and Password to log into NPPES to access my NPI?¶ NPPES now uses I&A to determine the Providers you have access to in NPPES. If you have access to a Provider, you will have access to all NPIs associated with the Provider.
Users can search and filter by relevant provider information displayed in the grid that includes, but is not limited to Provider’s Name, Telephone Number and NPI (limited to those providers and organizations with only 1 NPI).

You can obtain a National Provider Identifier (NPI) through the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES). If you have an I&A account and wish to apply for an NPI as an Individual Provider, you must use your I&A User ID to login to NPPES and apply for an NPI as an Individual Provider.
